HMC showcases Qatar's leadership in organ donation and transplantation in Istanbul

Hamad Medical Corporation's Centre for Organ Transplantation recently showcased Qatar's organ donation and transplantation programmes at the 30th International Congress of the Transplantation Society (TTS 2024) in Istanbul, Turkiye.HMC as a leading participant in the congress took the opportunity to highlight Qatar's leadership in organ donation and transplantation as well as highlighting the Doha International Centre for Strategy and Leadership in Transplantation, a new Qatar-led initiative that is collaborating with the World Health Organisation to address the world challenges in transplantation.HMC Deputy Chief Medical Officer for Clinical Affairs and Director of Qatar Centre for Organ Transplantation Dr Yousef al-Maslamani said that international standard facilities, experts and a unified organ waiting list have enhanced the organ transplant programme."Qatars Organ Transplant Programme offers kidney, liver and lung transplant surgeries making HMC one of the most comprehensive transplant centres in the region," he said."Since the start of Qatar's Organ Transplant Programme in 1986 it has expanded and strengthened the exceptional care for patients," Dr al-Maslamani added.He continued,"Today, HMC has in place a multidisciplinary team, with some leading international experts to give the highest level of care to our patients."In turn, Director of the Qatar Organ Donation Centre and Transplantation Society Councilor for the Middle east, West and Central Asia Dr. Riadh Fadhil said that Qatar is recognised as a regional leader in both organ donation and transplantation."Our purpose at the congress was to highlight Qatar's Organ Donation Journey, and to showcase how we were emphasising equity and human dignity to meet the country transplant needs together, and how we have built the trust within our diverse multicultural society and encouraged participation in the programme," Fadhil added.In 2024, around one quarter of Qatar's adult population are registered organ donors and has a single organ transplant waiting list and fair access to transplant services for all nationalities.The mission of The Transplantation Society is to provide global leadership in the practice of human transplantation and the organisation has around 8,000 members around the globe with 3,000 attendees at the congress.
