The Ministry of Endowments (Awqaf) and Islamic Affairs has chalked out a plan to refurbish 80 heritage mosques across the country, local Arabic daily Arrayah reported.The plan is implemented in cooperation with Qatar Museums (QM) in order to restore the original structure and heritage value. The work is carried out in five years in different phases and groups.The first group of mosques are at Al Ghuwairiyah, Arfiq, Umm Al-Qahhab, Al-Kaaban, Al-Zaghin and Al-Suwaihliyya. The renovation works of Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq Mosque are underway to preserve it as one of the country’s distinctive landmarks.Awqaf, according to the report, built 31 mosques in 2023 while maintenance works were carried out with several mosques across the country. Also, carpets were replaced with several mosques and Imam houses were built.QM is renovating mosques in residential areas as a destination for worshippers. This is with the aim of preserving its historical identity and being a witness of the past while providing present and future generations with an ideal edifice that tells about the country's history.QM, according to an earlier report by Arrayah, listed 67 mosques as ancient and planned immediate restoration and maintenance of any historical mosque by a specialised team.Experts have been appointed under the supervision of Qatari specialists to give training courses for workers who carry out restoration work in archaeological buildings. Traditional materials are used in the restoration of mosques and archaeological buildings to maintain the importance and authenticity of the archaeological site.
