The city of Doha won the Shanghai Global Award for Sustainable Development in Cities, in recognition of its pioneering efforts in achieving sustainable development goals through effective policies and action plans.The award was received by Abdulrahman Al Mana, an urban planner at the Ministry of Municipality, during a ceremony held in Alexandria, Egypt, as part of the celebrations for World Cities Day 2024. The event was attended by Egypt's Minister of Local Development Dr. Manal Awad, United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN-Habitat Anna Claudia Rossbach, along with representatives from 54 cities across 16 countries.The Shanghai Award is organized in collaboration between the United Nations and the city of Shanghai, aiming to promote the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the New Urban Agenda. The award seeks to support the eleventh SDG, localizing its targets, and to build a platform to strengthen the UN-Habitat Strategic Plan.It is worth noting that Doha was named a Creative City of Design in 2021 within UNESCO's Global Network of Creative Cities, received WHO accreditation as a healthy city along with all Qatari cities, and joined six other Qatari cities as members of UNESCO's Global Network of Learning Cities.
