US President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Chris Wright, founder and CEO of Liberty Energy, to lead the US Energy Department.

"As Secretary of Energy, Chris will be a key leader, driving innovation, cutting red tape, and ushering in a new 'Golden Age of American Prosperity and Global Peace," Trump said.

Trump added that Wright is "one of the pioneers who helped launch the American Shale Revolution."

Wright is known for his strong opposition to global cooperation on fighting climate change.

He has previously called climate change activists alarmist and said "There is no climate crisis, and we're not in the midst of an energy transition."

Trump's newly-formed Council of National Energy will oversee the path to US energy dominance.

This Council will oversee the path to US energy dominance by "cutting red tape, enhancing private sector investments across all sectors of the Economy, and by focusing on innovation over longstanding, but totally unnecessary, regulation," Trump said in a statement.
