The visit of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani to the Republic of Costa Rica highlights the advanced relations between Qatar and Latin American countries. These relations serve as a model of cooperation based on dialogue, understanding and common interests, whether in political and economic fields or in the cultural domain, which forms a fundamental pillar for fostering closeness between peoples.

His Highness the Amir's visit to Costa Rica represents an important step toward expanding cultural dialogue and enhancing mutual understanding. This cooperation reflects a shared vision aimed at achieving sustainable development through investing in the human and cultural connections that bind nations together.

Over decades, Latin American countries have opened their doors to Arab peoples, welcoming them warmly. This closeness has not been limited to humanitarian aspects but has also extended to clear solidarity with Arab causes, most notably the Palestinian cause.

Located in Central America, Costa Rica is renowned for its natural beauty and biodiversity, featuring dense forests and nature reserves rich in wildlife. Since 1823, the capital, San Jose, has been recognized as a political and cultural hub, home to prestigious universities, cultural and artistic institutions and multiple theaters. Additionally, the establishment of an Islamic center in 2002 reflects its cultural openness.

A significant milestone in the cultural relations between Qatar and Costa Rica was the signing of an agreement in 2014 to enhance cultural cooperation. This agreement encompassed the exchange of events and expertise, participation in seminars and art exhibitions, and encouraged the development of relationships between libraries and museums. It also facilitated researchers access to the preserved cultural heritage in both countries.

As part of Qatar's participation in international events in Costa Rica, the State of Qatar, represented by HE Minister of Environment and Climate Change Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie, took part in the High-Level Event on Ocean Action held under the theme "Immersed in Change" in the Republic of Costa Rica last June.

During his speech at the conference, HE the Minister of Environment and Climate Change highlighted Qatar's efforts in regards to protecting the marine environment, preserving its biodiversity and protecting it against pollution, adding that it does so through passing legislations, establishing marine reserves, as well as conducting research and studies, monitoring marine habitats and endangered species, in addition to raising environmental awareness.

Regarding artistic, creative and cultural cooperation, the Katara Cultural Village Foundation highlights the cultural relations between Qatar and Latin American countries through various events. One such event was the "Roots" Festival, which showcased the cultures of Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, with a diverse range of musical performances, dance arts, and exhibitions.

In June 2022, as part of Qatar's celebration of hosting the FIFA World Cup 2022, Katara, in collaboration with the Embassy of Costa Rica in Qatar, organized an event titled "Costa Rica, Soccer Culture". The event featured musical performances, artistic displays and sports exhibitions that reflected Costa Rica's passion for football and highlighted the excellence of Latin American arts. It was attended by a large audience of culture enthusiasts and sports fans.
