In a first-of-its-kind initiative, locally produced falcons by several Qatari farms competed in the 1st Katara championship for falcons and hunting organized by the Qatari Society of Al Gannas from Nov. 19 to 30.
Local falcon producers praised the initiative that aims to preserve environmental diversity in Qatar.
Saeed Rashid Al Nuaimi, head of the organizing committee, said that including a falcon competition produced by local farms encourages farm owners to increase the production and caretaking of such birds, which represents one of Al Gannas's goals to preserve environmental diversity and sustainability.
Mohammed Madi Al Hajri praised the efforts of the Qatari Society of Al Gannas and the Cultural Village Foundation (Katara) in supporting local producers.
The falconers competed on Tuesday in a number of competition finals in different categories.
The Qatari Society of Al Gannas organizes many championships and competitions to encourage falconers to hold onto their heritage, as well as to preserve this practice in Qatar for future generations.
