US President-elect Donald Trump discussed the issue of illegal immigration through Mexico in a phone call with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.
According to Trump, the Mexican President "agreed to stop Migration through Mexico," while Sheinbaum denied responsibility for immigration, stating that she had no intention of closing Mexicos borders.
In a post on the social media platform X, Sheinbaum said, "we reiterate that Mexicos position is not to close borders but to build bridges between governments and between peoples."
She added that she discussed the issue of migration and informed Trump that migrant caravans were not reaching the northern border with the United States. She also spoke about enhancing cooperation on security issues.
Trump stated in a post on his Truth Social account that the conversation with the Mexican president was "very productive," emphasizing that "she has agreed to stop Migration through Mexico, and into the United States, effectively closing our Southern Border."
Sheinbaum had previously threatened to impose tariffs on the United States after Trump announced he would impose a 25% tariff on all products entering the country from Canada and Mexico.
