The Katara Triathlon Championship, organised by the Qatar Cycling and Triathlon Federation, brought together over 200 athletes for an action-packed event at Katara – the Cultural Village Beach. Competitors, ranging across various age groups and categories, participated in the Super Sprint, Olympic Distance, national championship for Qataris, and Duathlon events, making the championship a true spectacle of endurance and skill.
The Super Sprint race tested athletes with a 750m swim, 19km bike ride, and a 5.6km run. The event saw Mohamed Nemsi clinch first place, followed by Abdulrahman Tantish in second and Mehdi Sfeili in third.
The Olympic Distance race was equally intense, featuring a 1.5km swim, 38km bike ride, and an 11km run. Bernard McCullagh emerged victorious, finishing ahead of Barry Egan and Nicholas Perry, who claimed second and third places, respectively.
In the National Championship category for Qataris aged 16-19, Haitham Abbasi showcased exceptional talent to secure first place. He was closely followed by Mansour al-Qashouti in second and Fahd Abdullah al-Kaabi in third.
The championship also included a Duathlon event, which combined a 100m run, a 12km cycling leg, and a 2.5km run, offering an alternative test of stamina and strategy.
Engineer Abdulaziz Soud al-Tamimi, President of the Qatar Cycling and Triathlon Federation, praised the success of the championship and the high level of participation. He said: “We are very proud of the success of this championship. The beautiful atmosphere accompanying the race made the championship an exceptional experience, where athletes not only enjoyed the athletic challenge but also appreciated the beauty of the organization and the surrounding environment.”
Abdullah Shaheen al-Kaabi, Secretary-General, also commented: “We witnessed exciting competitions, which reflects the significant development of the triathlon sport in Qatar, especially among citizens. This edition added a new category for Qataris, and we are committed to organising such events to promote sports culture and encourage young Qataris to participate.”
