Qatar University (QU) at a press conference announced the launch of the inaugural edition of the “ElCaptain” Futsal League.The league will take place on the university’s campus with broad participation from sports teams and support from several sponsors and organisers. The event aims to honour the legacy of Captain Saeed al-Mesnad, one of Qatar’s renowned sports figures, and to emphasise the societal role of sports in Qatar.Dr Senaid al-Marri, director of the Sports Affairs Department at QU, stated, “At QU, we have three main pillars we strive to achieve: education, scientific research, and community service. Hosting the Captain Saeed Al-Mesnad League embodies our commitment to community service. We take pride in supporting and promoting a culture of sports in Qatar while highlighting the contributions of prominent sports figures like Captain Saeed al-Mesnad.”Dr al-Marri said that the idea of honouring Captain Saeed al-Mesnad had been in consideration for some time, but it gained momentum following an initiative from his son and the support of Dr Omar al-Ansari, president of QU, and Dr Mohammed Diab, vice president for Student Affairs.Abdullah al-Qahtani, head of the Competitions Committee for the Captain Saeed Al-Mesnad League, emphasised that the organisation of the tournament was the result of extensive studies aimed at delivering a distinguished championship. Al-Qahtani stated, “The Captain Saeed Al-Mesnad League seeks to promote sportsmanship and to revitalise Qatari football through futsal. We have attracted over 60 Qatari players, including prominent names in the sports arena, and we expect high-level competition among eight teams over six weeks.”
