The State of Qatar stressed that stability cannot be achieved in the region and the world without a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue in accordance with international legitimacy, noting that Palestine is not a political issue confined to its geography only, but rather a major axis that affects the fate of peace and stability in the Middle East region and the world as a whole.
This came in the statement of the State of Qatar delivered by Her Excellency Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, before the open discussion session of the Security Council on maintaining international peace and security through practicing multilateral action and reforming and improving global governance, at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
Her Excellency said, "Since the beginning of the war on the Gaza Strip, the mediation efforts of the State of Qatar on January 15, 2025, reached a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement in Gaza between Israel and Hamas, in partnership with the sisterly Arab Republic of Egypt and the friendly United States of America. We hope that the implementation of this agreement will pave the way for the start of a credible political process that leads to a comprehensive and just peace for the Palestinian cause, in a way that achieves the right to self-determination for the brotherly Palestinian people and ensures the establishment of their independent, sovereign state on the 1967 borders."
Her Excellency stressed that the discussion on the practice of multilateral action, reform of global governance and respect for international law as an indispensable process for maintaining international peace and security is of great importance, especially since the year 2025 marks the eightieth anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, which is an opportunity to renew commitment to the historic mission that was set when the United Nations was established, which is "to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war", and to build a just international system with the United Nations at its forefront, as a first step in the path of multilateral action.
Her Excellency renewed the State of Qatar's call to adopt a comprehensive approach that ensures the prevention of conflicts and the achievement of sustainable peace, noting that she is proud of its mediation efforts that have contributed to reducing escalation and resolving many conflicts.
She explained that the State of Qatar's mediation efforts reflect a practical commitment to its foreign policy vision based on the principle of resolving disputes by peaceful means, dialogue, and preventive diplomacy to contribute to strengthening efforts to maintain international peace and security.
Her Excellency stressed that double standards in the practice of international relations undermine the authority of the rule of international law, and therefore, ensuring the equal and uniform application of international law by all states and international judicial institutions must be a goal and a priority.
Her Excellency renewed the State of Qatar's call to strengthen the role of the Security Council to assume its primary responsibilities in maintaining international peace and security, stressing the need to accelerate the pace of the Security Council reform process to meet the challenges of maintaining international peace and security.
Her Excellency affirmed the State of Qatar's firm commitment to multilateral action, renewing the call to accelerate the process of reforming and improving global governance to enhance our collective ability to respond effectively to global challenges.
