A rights group expressed deep shock at the horrific condition of the recently released Palestinian detainees under the Hamas-Israel prisoner exchange.
Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor said in a press statement Friday the signs of torture were apparent on the frail bodies of the seventh batch of the detainees released as part of the Gaza ceasefire agreement.
This deteriorating physical and psychological condition reflects the extent of systematic crimes and inhumane treatment that surpass all ethical and legal boundaries and proves Israel's continued use of torture as a weapon to intimidate, oppress, and break the will of prisoners and detainees until the very last moments of their detention, the nonprofit organization said.
The Monitor noted that the successive release of prisoners and detainees from Israeli prisons in severely deteriorated health conditions indicates that the brutal torture and deliberate medical neglect they are subjected to have reached shocking levels beyond all ethical and legal limits. It stressed that what takes place in these prisons far exceeds documented atrocities of detention facilities worldwide.
It explained that hundreds of released prisoners and detainees arrived in Gaza after midnight in extremely poor health conditions. Upon their transfer to the Gaza European Hospital southern the Gaza Strip, dozens were found in urgent need of medical care.
The organization documented Israels continued use of torture and psychological humiliation against released prisoners and detainees through measures that it said amount to direct incitement to violence and genocide.
Among these measures, the Monitor reported said, are Israeli prison authorities forcing released detainees to wear vests with threatening messages in Hebrew and plastic wristbands imprinted with intimidating phrases.
