A new UN report warned Wednesday of an "alarming increase" in child trafficking rates, with children accounting for 38 percent of global human trafficking victims, amid estimates that the actual figures may be higher than reported.The annual report of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence against Children, submitted to the Human Rights Council, indicated an increase in the percentage of child victims over the past five years, especially among girls.The report warned that this crime will continue to rise unless immediate and decisive action is taken, highlighting that increased global access to the internet has exacerbated the risk of criminals exploiting its platforms for trafficking activities.Dr. Najat Maalla M'jid, Special Representative of the Secretary-General, emphasized that human traffickers are exploiting technology and crises, while counter-terrorism responses remain inadequate, calling for greater investment in social protection systems and legal accountability.The report highlighted three main factors behind the growth of this crime: the exacerbation of children's vulnerability due to poverty and conflict, the expansion of trafficking networks using technology, and the rising demand for child exploitation in various forms.The UN official called for comprehensive and coordinated responses to eliminate child trafficking by 2030, stressing the importance of involving survivors and children at risk in formulating solutions in a safe and ethical manner.
