Diwan Al Arab celebrates World Poetry Day with special evening

The Qatar Poetry Center (Diwan Al Arab), affiliated with the Ministry of Culture (MoC), organized a special poetry evening at Qatar National Library (QNL) to celebrate World Poetry Day, observed annually on March 21.The event featured poets Radhi al-Hajri and Mahmoud al-Zaibak, with Abdul Hamid al-Youssef serving as the moderator. The poets presented a diverse array of poems reflecting Islamic teachings, the spiritual essence of the holy month of Ramadan, devotion to Allah, and prayers during the sacred period.Poet Shabib bin Arar al-Nuaimi, Director of Diwan Al Arab highlighted the significance of World Poetry Day for poets worldwide, noting that the centre is committed to celebrating this day with poetry evenings that feature local poets, showcasing both Nabati and classical Arabic poetry.Al-Nuaimi added that the evening, held at Qatar National Library, shed light on how poets through the ages have addressed themes of devotion, supplication, and actions that align with Islamic values. He remarked that both classical and contemporary Islamic poetry resonate deeply with such values, adding richness to the art form. He further praised Qatar's vibrant literary scene, emphasising the significant contribution of Qatari poets who excel in captivating audiences, whether in competitions or among poetry enthusiasts.Abdul Hamid al-Youssef, the evening's moderator, reflected that while celebrating World Poetry Day, the evening delves into both Nabati and classical poetry. Poetry transcends time, touching the soul before the ear and conveying emotions with eloquence.He added that today, in Ramadan, with hearts bowing in devotion and voices rising in humility to the Creator, this evening, poetry serves as a means to draw closer to Allah, cleansing hearts with repentance and inspiring spirits toward goodness.Poet Mahmoud al-Zaibak applauded Qatar's initiative to celebrate World Poetry Day, describing it as a remarkable effort to promote poetry, inspire poets, and encourage excellence in their craft. He highlighted the Ministry of Culture's strong support for poetry through events and competitions that extend the reach of this art form globally.Poet Radhi al-Hajri remarked that on World Poetry Day, and through this event organized by the Qatar Poetry Center, the poems reflect the spirituality of Ramadan, particularly its final 10 days, and hosting the evening at the historic Qatar National Library, which houses diverse poetry collections and historical manuscripts, added a unique significance.Al-Hajri also emphasized the pivotal role of poetry in upholding values and serving the community. He noted that poetry is a cornerstone of societal development, adding that the literary heritage is an effective means to convey positive messages, and stressing that using poetry to promote public interest, values, and ideals is a noble endeavour and one of the most profound ways to shape the human identity of societies.
