The Arab League has expressed its vehement condemnation of the Israeli bombardment of the town of Koya, in western countryside of Daraa in Syria, which killed and injured several innocent civilians. It reiterated its unequivocal rejection of the persistent Israeli assaults on the Syrian territories. In a statement on Wednesday, Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit said that these assaults constitute an egregious violation of Syria's sovereignty and an apparent move to take advantage of the situation in Syria to carve up its territories and foment sedition and conflicts. He stressed that the UN Security Council is required to uphold its role in halting the savage and unprovoked Israeli aggression on Syria and compelling Israel to respect international law and the 1974 Agreement on Disengagement. In addition, Aboul Gheit called on the international community to take strong and clear positions to deter the Israeli colonial and aggressive behavior toward nations and peoples of the region, reiterating the Arab League's solidarity with the Syrian Arab Republic in countering these recurrent Israeli breaches, alongside its full support for Syria's sovereignty, unity, independence and territorial integrity.
