Azam Khan: End of an era

Bangladesh pop singer Mahbubul Haque Khan, popularly known as Azam Khan, died of throat cancer yesterday at the age of 61.
He was survived by his wife, two daughters, and a son.
Azam Khan was on life support at the city’s Square Hospital since March 27 and shifted to CMH on Wednesday.
Earlier, on May 22, the pop singer was admitted to Square Hospital when his condition deteriorated.
He was diagnosed with the cancer in 2010 and underwent advanced treatment in Singapore twice that year. But he did not follow up on his
treatment.
Born on February 28, 1950, Azam Khan had fought valiantly against the Pakistani occupation forces in the country’s 1971 Liberation War. He introduced an energetic brand of music, too.
He also performed in two Bangladeshi films.
Earlier, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from her welfare fund donated 5,00,000 taka in aid of Azam Khan.
The prime minister previously donated 2,00,000 taka for the treatment of the ailing pop singer.
