General Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan

General Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan, who was appointed the new Chief of Army Staff on June 7, took charge yesterday.

The military’s press wing said in a media statement that Gen Bhuiyan officially took over the command of Bangladesh Army from Gen Abdul Mubeen.
The ceremony was attended by senior army officials including Principal Staff Officer of the Armed Forces Division, said the Inter-Service Public Relations Directorate.
Earlier in the day, the outgoing chief, Gen Mubeen, had placed wreath at the memorial of army officers who died during the Liberation War. He was also given guard of honour at the Army
Officer’s Club.
Gen Mubeen had been the army chief since June 15, 2009.
Gen Bhuiyan was an infantry officer and Quarter Master General before the latest appointment.
During his career in the army, he served as a UN force commander and held important commanding positions including the GOC of the Savar-based 9th Infantry Division and the Chief of General Staff. He also headed the Defence Services Command and Staff College.
Mubeen was scheduled to retire on Jun 15 this year, which was delayed by 10 days an order of the President after making the appointment of new Army Chief.
A cadet of the 3rd BMA short course, Gen Bhuiyan went to Faujderhat Cadet College and was commissioned in the army in Nov 1976. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General in May 2010.
