Nizar Kochery being honoured at Upakar Qatar meeting

Community activists should take the initiative to identify and solve problems without waiting for complaints to reach them, a leading Indian legal activist has said.
“Even though social workers face several hurdles while performing their duty, nobody is going to stop them if they feel what they are doing is right, where ever it is,” Nizar Kochery said.
He was speaking at a reception held in his honour by the Indian expatriate forum Unity of Pala and Kaduthuruthy Residents (Upakar Qatar) as part of its seventh anniversary celebrations.
At the meeting, Kochery was honoured for his recent judicial initiatives in securing the release of several Indian fishermen held by Qatar coastguards for illegally entering the country’s territorial waters. His efforts in getting the death sentence of two Indian nationals commuted in a sensational case earlier this year also came in for praise from the forum.
Indian Cultural Centre (ICC) president K M Varghese inaugurated the meeting.
Upakar Qatar officials Joppachen Thekkekuttu, Biju John, Jose Kuriyan and Manoj Mathew spoke.
The forum honoured the children of its members who performed well in this year’s CBSE Class 10 and Class 12 examination.
Several cultural items including dance, music and skits were presented as part of the annual celebrations.
