B K Mohamed Kunhi, a former principal of MES Indian School in Doha, died on Thursday in India.
Kunhi, 74, who was well-known as a teacher, academician, administrator and visionary, led the institution for 23 years from 1979 to 2002, and was instrumental in making MES one of the leading Indian schools in the Gulf.
He made remarkable contributions towards the introduction of internal reforms in the school in teaching, testing and evaluation.
The school elevated him to the post of academic director in 2002, and in 2004 became the rector with the charge of overall supervision and control of the academics, administration, discipline, co-curricular and extracurricular activities.
Kunhi was one of the brains behind the formation of the Council of the CBSE affiliated schools in the Gulf and served it as its secretary and chairman.
He was on several occasions appointed convener of the inspection team of the CBSE in the Gulf and a member of the CBSE National Sports and Games Committee, New Delhi.
“Kunhi was a person of intense foresight and a master craftsman. His devotion to the cause of education and dedication to his profession was matchless” recalled B M Sidhique, president of the school’s governing body. General secretary A Shamsuddeen described Kunhi as an illustrious academician and an able administrator and said that the Indian expatriate community owes a lot to him.
“His great vision and commitment have made MES a prestigious citadel of learning. We are indebted to him for his invaluable contributions,”
Shamsuddeen added.
Principal A P Sasidharan, who had worked with Kunhi for several years, recalled that Kunhi was a strong but very affectionate personality, and a unique figure in the field of education.
“It was his policies and reforms that propelled the growth of MES to the present strength of about 10,000 students and 800 staff,” he added.
