The Music Lovers Group will host a Hindustani classical concert by noted singer Kaushiki Chakraborty (pictured) on February 16 at Concorde Hotel, Airport Road at 8pm.
The 32-year-old singer, a child prodigy born to musician parents Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty and Chandana, could glide over all seven notes with ease and reproduce any musical phrase effortlessly even as a child.
After initial training under her mother, Kaushiki went onto learn from the illustrious Guru Jnanprakash Ghosh following which her father, an internationally acclaimed classical vocalist, took over her grooming.
Kaushiki is now one of the leading vocalists among the new generation musicians. She is described as probably the only vocalist of her time who can combine the rich ‘gayaki’ of ‘khayal’ with the emotional and soulful rendition of ‘thumri,’ ‘dadra,’ ‘bhajan’ and other semi-classical forms of music with extreme virtuosity.
The singer, who has been credited with making Indian classical music popular among young listeners, is also a widely recorded musician and has several albums with well-known record labels to her credit. The album Pure was awarded the best album by BBC Asia Pacific.
