The Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee has appointed KEO as the project manager and AECOM as the design consultant for Al Wakrah Stadium, which will have a tournament capacity of 45,000 during the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Following the tournament, the stadium’s capacity will be reduced to 20,000, with 25,000 seats removed, donated and re-constructed in co-ordination with FIFA in countries that require assistance in developing sporting infrastructure.
The vision for the delivery of the Al Wakrah stadium is one that embraces the cultural heritage of the host city and the adjacent historical Qatari settlement of Al Wukair, incorporating this identity as part of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar fan experience.
“This is an important step for us as we deliver on our innovative hosting concept,” said Hassan al-Thawadi, secretary general for the Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee. “We are looking forward to working with our partners on Al Wakrah Stadium to construct an amazing sporting facility that both serves the local community and integrates with Al Wakrah’s fabric. We are delighted with the sustainable legacy that this stadium, as well as forthcoming ones, will leave behind for Qatar and the world.
“In the coming months, we will also bring on-board a project manager and design consultant for Al Rayyan Stadium,” he added.
CH2M HILL, the programme management consultant for the Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee, will supervise both KEO and AECOM to ensure the successful delivery of the Al Wakrah Stadium and Precinct in line with the Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee’s vision, mission and strategic goals.
KEO will develop a world-class health, safety and environmental programme for the stadium and precinct, assist the 2022 Supreme Committee in delivering on commitments made to FIFA and perform project management, design management, commercial management and construction management services on behalf of the committee.
KEO is responsible for the overall management, strategy and implementation of the project. More broadly, their remit includes the successful management of design, procurement, construction, testing and commissioning of the precinct, associated facilities and the surrounding areas for both the tournament and legacy stages.
AECOM, in association with Zaha Hadid Architects, will work collaboratively with the Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee, CH2M HILL and KEO throughout the design and delivery process to ensure compliance with all required design standards and sustainability requirements, as well as all the local and international codes relevant to the project.
Moreover, AECOM will ensure the integration of cooling technology systems with climate control objectives and requirements for renewable energy production.
The appointment of KEO and AECOM follows a community survey of Al Wakrah residents, aimed at gauging public opinion on development of the precinct (surrounding area) of the new stadium.
Work to follow new charter guidelines
Construction work carried out on Al Wakrah Stadium will be guided by the recently-launched Workers Charter, according to the Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee. It affirms that all contractors and sub-contractors engaged in the delivery of its projects will comply with the principles set out in this charter as well as all relevant Qatari laws. The principles of the charter will be “robustly and effectively monitored and enforced by the committee for the benefit of all workers”. Compliance with the Workers Charter and all relevant Qatari laws is a pre-requisite for the selection and retention by the Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee of its contractors and sub-contractors.
