Qatar Chess Association will organise Qatargas Chess Championship for children in the age group of 6-14 years here at the Crown Plaza Hotel from October 24 to 26, 2013. |
This was announced in a press conference held at the Qatargas Doha Head Office which was jointly addressed by Mansour Rashid al-Naimi, Public Relations manager, Qatargas, and Khalifa Mohammed al-Hitmi, president of the Qatar Chess Association and vice president of the World Chess Federation (FIDE).
The tournament is open to all residents of Qatar from both genders.
Commenting on Qatargas’ support for the championship, al-Naimi said: “Qatargas is pleased to support Qatar Chess Association in organising this tournament which is aimed at bringing together a large number of young chess enthusiasts in Qatar. Our support for the game of chess forms part of a strategy we adopted in developing a group of sports activities that are fast gaining popularity in Qatar.
“This strategy aims primarily at introducing young talent available at the grass roots level and nurturing them in the best possible manner, thereby contributing to achieving the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030.”
Speaking on the occasion, al-Hitmi said: “We thank Qatargas for its commendable support for this championship which will help promote the game of Chess in Qatar particularly as this championship is targeting youngsters in the age-group of 6 to 14 years. Chess, as we all know, has such benefits as developing mental skills of children and is directly linked to their education. This noble gesture from Qatargas manifests the company’s deep commitment to the local community and its keenness in developing a generation with high mental capabilities. As we hail the support of Qatargas in organising this tournament so effectively for the first time, we look forward to continuing this co-operation and making this an annual feature of Qatar’s sporting calendar.”
Al-Hitmi said the championship will start at 5 pm on October 24 and will conclude by 8 p.m. on October 26. Registration of players will begin at the Crown Plaza Hotel on October 24 from 4 pm onwards. Valuable prizes will be given to the participants.
