Occidental Petroleum of Qatar Ltd (Oxy Qatar) has donated QR1,232,000 (about $338,000) to Qatar Red Crescent (QRC) as part of Oxy Qatar’s partnership with QRC to support economic and social empowerment projects.
The contribution will help provide food vouchers for 54 needy families.
The overall goal of Oxy Qatar’s partnership with QRC is to help improve the well-being of the less fortunate and provide them with tools that they can use to maintain happy, healthy and productive lives.
Saleh bin Ali al-Mohannadi, secretary-general of QRC, praised the efforts of Oxy Qatar and called on all businesses to exercise their corporate social responsibility within the communities in which they operate through generous donations that support various QRC projects to help the less fortunate.
“I would like to stress that one of the values and directives of Qatar Red Crescent is to promote a sense of social responsibility in all sectors of business and give them the opportunity to apply their humanitarian orientation on the ground,” al-Mohannadi said.
On the role of QRC in economic and social empowerment, al-Mohannadi said: “Qatar Red Crescent plays a significant role in supporting and empowering needy families in Qatar, creating and enabling an environment for the integration of marginalised and vulnerable groups in society. QRC implemented a range of humanitarian projects to support and empower the disadvantaged groups through financial assistance and projects, including educational support to children of needy families, funding treatment of needy patients, professional empowerment of women, and more.”
More than 10,000 people in Qatar benefited from QRC’s economic and social empowerment projects in 2012-2013.
Stephen Kelly, president and general manager of Oxy Qatar, said: “Oxy is proud to continue its partnership with Qatar Red Crescent, providing support in the area of social and economic empowerment”.
