Tourists dipping their feet in the freshwater Goldfish (Carassius aumtus) enclosure at the fish therapy centre on the southern river of Madu Ganga at Ampe, 87km south of Colombo, yesterday. Fish therapy, which has gained worldwide popularity, is an ancient form of medical treatment in Sri Lanka. Although in most South and East Asian countries these fish are kept in artificial ponds, Sri Lanka is unique in setting up enclosures in freshwater along the many rivers on the island.
