Qatar Petrochemical Company (Qapco) has launched its 2014 summer internship programme, welcoming 70 students from local and international universities who will undergo an eight-week intensive training at the industrial plant.

“I believe that all aspiring engineers should, at some stage of their education, experience the thrill of working in an industrial plant and witness for themselves the processes, applications and technology that they study in academia,” said Qapco vice-chairman and CEO Dr Mohamed Yousef al-Mulla at
the launch.

The programme started on June 24 with a three-day induction course designed to introduce the students to the company. It included health and safety training, orientation of the plant and the issuing of personal protective equipment.

Al-Mulla said they also hold workshops every Thursday for all students. Topics include leadership skills, team building and motivation as well as a workshop outlining the fundamentals of research and development that are essential to shape Qapco’s sustainable future.

He noted that they received many applications from candidates in Qatar and abroad who wanted to join the training. Qapco offers unique internship positions focusing on disciplines such as mechanical, electrical and chemical engineering.

Abdulla Ahmad Naji, Qapco’s Learning and Development manager, said this type of learning cannot be achieved in classrooms or lecture halls. Trained by experts who have more than 20 years’ experience, Naji believes that students will acquire first-hand knowledge of the petrochemical industry through internship.

“It may also encourage some of the Engineering students to join the new Qapco Apprenticeship Programme once they have completed their degree,” he added.

Qapco is one of the leading petrochemical powerhouses in the region and a pioneer in petrochemical production. Its internship programme offers both Qatari and expatriate students learning opportunities that will help them prepare for the growing prospects in the oil and gas industry in Qatar and around the world.
