Philippines inaugurates world’s largest indoor arena
DPA/ManilaThe Philippine president yesterday inaugurated a $200mn indoor arena, touted to be the world’s largest, and built by a Christian sect. The Philippine Arena has a total floor area of 99,000 square metres and a seating capacity of more than 50,000. Its dome spans over 36,000 square metres, according to the Iglesia Ni Cristo or Church of Christ. President Benigno Aquino led the inauguration of the arena, which was completed ahead of the sect’s centennial celebrations later this month. “This is a proof of the Filipinos’ determination to achieve our lofty dreams and our ability to compete in the world,” he said at the arena’s opening. The arena is set to be used for church events, as well as sports events and concerts. The Church of Christ has at least 3mn members in more than 112 countries. It is seen to exert considerable political influence in the Philippines. Politicians seek the support of the church’s leaders during elections since its members are known to vote as a group.
