Javi Martinez limped off during the match agianst Borussia Dortmund.

Bayern Munich midfielder Javi Martinez has ruptured the cruciate ligament in his left knee and is sidelined for several months, the Bundesliga club confirmed yesterday.

The Spaniard Martinez limped off 31 minutes into the German super cup game the previous day at Borussia Dortmund which Munich lost 2-0. “The midfielder sustained a ruptured cruciate ligament in his left knee ... Martinez will be out of action for at least the rest of this year,” Bayern said.

The statement came after a medical conducted by Munich doctors Hans-Wilhelm Mueller-Wohlfahrt and Peter Ueblacker, and Munich said that Martinez will undergo surgery in the US. “Obviously I’m extremely sad at this moment, but don’t worry - I’ll come back even stronger!” Munich quoted the 25-year-old as saying.

The injury of the influential Martinez, who was also hampered by injury problems last season, is a huge blow for coach Pep Guardiola and his team.

The injury adds to the woes of Munich who have had their German World Cup winners around captain Philipp Lahm only just start pre-season training, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery not fully fit, and Thiago Alcantara and Rafinha out injured for several weeks.

While Munich had expected a difficult season after the World Cup, the latest injury news may prompt them to sign new players in the remaining days of the transfer window. Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer said the squad was good enough without newcomers, but Lahm did not want to rule out new signings although that decision would be made by club officials.

“We have a good squad, but the question is how long these players will be sidelined,” Lahm said.

However, back in full Munich training is Holger Badstuber who last played in December 2012 when he suffered the same injury as Martinez in a Bundesliga match with Dortmund, and then ruptured the ligament again.

Badstuber was among the first well-wishers for Martinez, tweeting: “All the best @Javi8martinez !!! Stay strong my friend!!!”
