A large number of people including diplomats thronged the Thai embassy on Friday to be part of the “Loy Krathong Festival in Doha,” one of the most celebrated festivals in Thailand.

Thai children and members of the Thai Language and Cultural School in Doha performed on stage a number of cultural dances and presentations, enthralling guests and visitors.

Authentic Thai food such as Pad Thai, spring rolls and sweets were also offered at the event. The festival also showcased handicrafts, the popular Thai massage and traditional games – all arranged in a bazaar style at the chancery.

“I am certain that you will feel like you are experiencing Loy Krathong festival in Thailand,” said ambassador Piroon Laismit in his speech. “I hope the after this event, you may want to visit Thailand even more.”

Besides highlighting Thai tradition and culture, he noted that the festival is also a time for family reunion and entertainment among friends especially the Loy Krathong dancing.

“On the night of the full-moon day of the 12th lunar month which usually falls in November, many Thais float a decorated basket, called Krathong, down a river, canal or even a pond to make a wish…” said Laismit.

The embassy will also hold a separate celebration on November 6 at the Grand Hyatt hotel.

The ambassador’s son, Chavis shares the same view saying the popular festival is exciting, interesting and people get to taste delicious Thai food.

He said in Thailand, many young people visit each other friend’s house to eat and celebrate with their families.

Chavis’ favourite part is when people set a boat made from banana leaves into the water.

“Traditionally, in Thailand, we go to the river and set those boats and they float, that is the best part – full of fun,” he said.

The embassy also holds similar celebrations annually such as the Songkran (Thai New Year) with a variety of activities and cultural performances.

It is learnt that Songkran is celebrated all over Thailand. People who don’t mind getting wet stay outdoors while others prefer to stay indoors.

Many Thai expatriates in Qatar take their annual leaves and go back home to attend the actual Songkran festival, which is more of a family occasion and paying respect to parents and grandparents.
