Lieutenant General Abu Belal Muhammad Shafiul Huq has been appointed the new chief of Bangladesh army, a defence ministry notification said yesterday.
He will remain army chief for three years from June 25, 2015 to June 25, 2018, the notification said.
Lt General Shafiul Huq will replace the outgoing army chief General Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan.
He has been acting as principal staff officer at Prime Minister’s Office in Dhaka since
January 1, 2013.
Prior to assuming this position he had been serving as the commandant, Defence Services Command and Staff College
in Dhaka.
Lt General Belal was commissioned in Armoured Corps on June 18, 1978.
Belal obtained his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Dhaka University and Master’s degree on Defence Studies from National University in Bangladesh.
He was a member of the pioneer group of officers sent to UN Peace Keeping Mission from Bangladesh.
