HE the Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al-Thani on Sunday inaugurated the Labour City at Mesaimeer near the Industrial Area, which is the largest of its kind in Qatar and the Gulf region.

At the beginning of the opening ceremony, HE the Prime Minister watched a documentary about the various stages of the project's progress and its important components and features.

The Labour City is just 14 kilometres from central Doha and 13 km from the Hamad International Airport. The Special Engineering Office oversaw its completion and implementation over almost three years.

Built over an area of 1.1mn square metres, the new Labour City can accommodate 100,000 workers and is considered as a human and cultural model. It provides a suitable environment, security and safety, care and recreation areas, reflecting the concern of the State to provide services for residents and develop the individual and the community.

The Labour City has two sections: the entertainment and business district, which includes a commercial centre and a market with 200 shops fitting the tastes and cultures of its inhabitants, a cricket ground, the largest in Qatar and designed in conformity with international specifications and standards, a theatre accommodating 17,000 people and which will host various events, special occasions and festivals in co-ordination with the embassies of communities and competent authorities, in addition to four modern cinema halls.

The second section of the city hosts the residential complexes for workers and has been built in accordance with international standards and contains 55 residential buildings with a capacity of 100,000 workers, places of worship, a medical clinic and parking lot for buses.

The residential buildings are designed according to the highest safety standards of the early warning and fire extinguishing systems as well as an appropriate number of emergency exits.

The accommodation also includes essential services such as laundry while the residential complex has green areas and wide spaces for daily exercise and activities, in addition to reflecting an aesthetic image of the city.

The city has also been provided with a number of public telephone booths as well as Wi-Fi-equipped centres to give residents a chance to communicate with their families and their loved ones at home.

There are two mosques and a large mosque for Friday noon prayer which can accommodate 6,500 worshipers, the second largest mosque in Qatar. In addition, the city is close to the Religious Complex.

The facility also has an integrated network of surveillance cameras linked to the two police posts allocated to provide security and emergency response. It also features nine entrances on all four sides.

Occupying 2,000 square metres, the medical clinic seeks to meet the medical needs of workers and has been designed to deal with urgent cases and quick examination. Patients who require further treatment will be transferred to the new health centre or to the new Workers Hospital, currently under construction, and due to be completed in the first quarter of next year.
