Nepal hails Qatar’s efforts to protect workers’ rights

QNA/DohaChairman of Nepalese National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Anup Raj Sharma has praised Qatar’s efforts in protecting the rights of workers. He made the comment during the signing of a memorandum of understanding to enhance co-operation between Qatar National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) and his committee. The MoU was signed by NHRC Chairman Dr Ali bin Smaikh al-Marri and his Nepalese counterpart Anup Raj Sharma. While expressing his satisfaction over the signing of the MoU, Sharma lauded Qatar’s efforts in the protection and promotion of the rights of Nepalese workers, both in terms of legislative texts and the rapid enforcement of laws. “We commend this great attention given by the State of Qatar to human rights and to the preservation of the rights of Nepalese workers in particular,” he said, welcoming the Qatari NHRC’s initiative to sign the MoU on the protection of workers’ rights, and thanking Dr al-Marri for hosting the event. Sharma described the MOU as a milestone in the protection and promotion of the rights of Nepalese workers in Qatar as well as a gateway for joint co-operation between the two institutions, adding that it would broaden the scope of international and regional assistance to protect the rights of workers. During a tour of Qatari NHRC’s departments, he hailed the opening of a special office for the Nepalese community at NHRC headquarters alongside other offices for a number of communities in the country. The MoU, signed yesterday, is designed to organise and facilitate the relations between the two committees and promote close co-operation and enhance exchange of information and communication. The MoU shall remain in force for a period of four years, renewable thereafter.
