Thirty female students from Qatar University College of Law (QU-LAWC) have participated in two charitable and humanitarian activities under an initiative of the college’s externship programme in conjunction with Female Law Student Club and Human Rights Club. The selected projects - the American Women’s Association of Qatar (AWAQ) Heart Pillow Project and the Hamad Children’s Hospital Dolls Project - support breast cancer survivors at the National Centre for Cancer Care and Research (NCCCR) at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), and children recovering from or preparing to undergo surgical operations at its Children’s Hospital. The law students were involved in sewing more than 30 heart-shaped pillows and 85 drainage bags for NCCCR breast cancer survivors, as well as more than 45 dolls for children at the Hospital. In addition, they gifted female cancer patients various toiletries such as shampoos, conditioners, lotions, and soaps.“By engaging students in volunteer activities, we are strengthening their ties with the wider community, and encouraging them to enhance their teamwork, organisational, communication and leadership capabilities that will serve them in their future personal and professional endeavours,” said LAWC dean Dr Mohammed bin Abdulaziz al-Khulaifi.“This shows the college’s commitment to providing students with practical skills-based opportunities while encouraging their engagement in and sense of responsibility to the community in which they live in line with the culture of community service and volunteerism at QU,” he added.Externship programme director Dr Melissa Joy Deehring said: “These activities are part of the various outreach projects in which the college encourages its students to give back to the community and be role models for the young ones following in their footsteps. The students’ enthusiasm was truly remarkable and inspiring, and in this spirit, we plan to expand this initiative to all female students at QU.”
