Dominic Davon sank 38 points and Salem Abdulla chipped in with 20 as Al Rayyan eased past El Jaish in the Qatar Cup basketball tournament last night.
Al Rayyan, the most successful basketball team in Qatar, were slow off the blocks but once they hit their stride they ensured they were comfortably ahead most of the time before wrapping up proceedings 91-77.
After a neck and neck first quarter which they edged 20-18, Al Rayyan scored 25 points in the second quarter to open up a 45-32 lead and held a 66-56 cushion going into the final 10 minutes. That proved too much of a deficit for El Jaish to overcome as Al Rayyan added 25 more in the final period to close out the game.
Davon hit three three-pointers while Abdulla had four. Alban Ngombo also excelled for the winners with 17 points.
For El Jaish, Ernest Bell top-scored with 23 points with four three-pointers, while Yousuf Mohamed and Leon Macklin chipped in with 17 and 14 respectively.
In another match, Al Gharafa edged Al Shamal 78-68 with Dwayne Galloway top-scoring for the winners with 23 points.
The match appeared pretty close to call when Al Gharafa led 33-29 at the end of the second quarter, but Al Shamal couldn’t come up with the required momentum to pose much of a challenge.
Al Gharafa increased their advantage to 61-45 by adding a whopping 28 points in the third quarter while restricting Al Shamal to just 16.
That proved the killer blow in the final analysis and even a late surge of 23 points by Al Shamal couldn’t help their cause.
Timotheus Massey also excelled for Al Gharafa with
17 points, while Mohamed Saad had 15.
For Al Shamal, Kamal Hachad was the top-scorer with 23 points, while Mildon Ambres and Abdulqadir Kosar chipped in with 15 and 12 respectively.
