With a view to impart a fillip to traffic safety in Qatar, new awareness campaigns and training programmes for drivers will be developed.

The initiative is part of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on Monday between the Qatar Transportation and Traffic Safety Center (QTTSC) at Qatar University College of Engineering (QU-CENG), and the General Directorate of Traffic.
The MoU is aimed at establishing collaboration on the exchange of information and consultancy on traffic safety. The terms include partnering on the evaluation of the current studies and consultations in the area of traffic safety.
Both parties will also co-operate to run development programmes in co-ordination with international organisations and research centres. Other areas of collaboration include joint research projects in areas of transportation and traffic safety.
The MoU was signed by QU vice president for Research and Graduate Studies Prof Mariam al-Maadeed and General Directorate of Traffic director Brigadier Mohamed Saad al-Kharji.
Present on the occasion were the National Committee for Traffic Safety general secretary Brigadier Mohamed al-Malki, QU Chief Strategy and Development Officer Dr Darwish al-Emadi, CENG dean and QTTSC director Dr Khalifa al-Khalifa, ExxonMobil vice president and Government and Public Affairs director Saleh S Al Mana.
“Road safety is one of the main areas of interest in Qatar, and the College of Engineering through QTTSC continues to highlight its commitment to road safety by investing in research and awareness programmes that will help find sustainable solutions to the road and traffic challenges,” observed Dr al-Khalifa.
The MoU demonstrates CENG’s continuous efforts to contribute to road safety in Qatar through reducing road traffic crashes and developing a safe road transport system in line with the National Road Safety Strategy, he added.
Brigadier al-Kharji was of the view that the MoU will contribute to providing solutions for Qatar’s traffic safety challenges since it adds value to our collaboration efforts of the General Directorate of Traffic to overcome the challenges.
The event featured a brief on the outcomes of the research papers by QTTSC and the General Directorate of Traffic. The papers are sponsored by ExxonMobil. They included: “In-Depth Analysis of Road Traffic Accidents in Qatar between 1995-2014”, “Prediction of Road Accidents in the State of Qatar in 2022”, “Assessing Road Safety Campaigns in Qatar between 2007-2015”, “Doha Expressway Study”, “Safety Performance of School Buses in Qatar”, and “Study on Pedestrian Safety Enhancement in Qatar”.
