The Picasso-Giacometti exhibition at Doha Fire Station’s Garage Gallery has attracted nearly 400 children since its opening on February 22.
Qatar Museums (QM) has also trained more than 75 teachers in 12 three-hour long workshops.
Such activity allowed teachers to conduct self-guided tours of the exhibition for students, run workshops and equip them with materials to have post-visit discussions with students, QM said in a statement.
“I hope that all students that visited Picasso-Giacometti came away with lasting memories,” QM Chairperson HE Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani said.
“At QM, we pride ourselves on our commitment to contributing to the educational landscape of the State of Qatar and are committed to providing educational opportunities that enrich lives, broaden horizons and stimulate creativity within the community,” she noted.
“I hope that through such educational programmes, students are inspired to become creative, compassionate and engaged individuals. I also hope that more schools and teachers across Qatar come forward, to visit the exhibition and be inspired by two of the greatest artists of all time,” said HE Sheikha Al Mayassa.
School trips can be organised independently, or with QM educators, who offer guided tours and related workshops during the week, including hands on workshops where students can create their own art based on the show. Teachers are also invited to visit the show independently with their classes.
The blockbuster exhibition, a collaboration between QM, the Musée national Picasso-Paris, and the Fondation Giacometti, is the first to show these artists together in the Middle East.
The show brings together more than 120 works, covering paintings, sculptures, sketches, photographs and interviews with the artists and explores, for the first time, the previously unknown relationship between the two artists, who, despite an age gap of twenty years, shared many key moments during their distinguished careers.
In addition, Qatar Museums is gearing up to bring two new exhibitions to Doha this summer that will also offer an educational programme.
In June, the Fire Station’s ‘End of Residency’ exhibition will display the works of artists taking part in this year’s Artists in Residence programme while ‘Skate Girls of Kabul,’ an exhibition about the extraordinary story of Afghan girls who took up skateboarding will open on June 15.
Students are briefed about the masterpieces of the two artists.
