HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani received 26 Qatari citizens who were freed in Iraq after being held in captivity for more than a year upon their arrival at Doha International Airport yesterday.
The Qatari citizens who had entered Iraq legally were kidnapped while on a hunting trip in December 2015.
Meanwhile, HH the Emir received phone calls yesterday from a number of leaders of Arab and Islamic countries, who expressed their sincere congratulations on the safe return of Qatari citizens from Iraq.
The Emir received phone calls from Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmed al-Jaber al-Sabah, King Hamad bin Issa al-Khalifah of the Kingdom of Bahrain, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Bahraini Prime Minister Prince Khalifah bin Salman al-Khalifah.
HH the Emir expressed thanks for the calls made by their Majesties, excellencies, and highnesses and for their good sentiments.
The Organisation of Islamic Co-operation (OIC) also welcomed the release of Qatari citizens. OIC Secretary-General Dr Yousef bin Ahmed al-Othaimeen expressed his appreciation of the Iraqi government’s efforts in finding and releasing the Qataris.
