More than 150 healthcare practitioners, academics, students, researchers
and pharmacists attended the Continuous Professional Development (CPD)
accredited workshop, which was recently held by the Biomedical Research
Centre (BRC) at Qatar University (QU), QU-Health and Qatar National
Research Fund (QNRF).
Themed ‘Tissue Engineering and Stem Cell Technologies’, the event aimed
to discuss tissue engineering and stem cell technologies, a popular area
of research with the potential to cure serious diseases – including
cardiovascular, orthopaedic and neuronal disorders. The event’s
programme included lectures delivered by local and international experts
in the field of tissue engineering and stem cell technologies. They
provided a brief on their area of research and findings in stem cells.
Commenting on the event, QU College of Health Sciences dean and BRC
director Dr Asma al-Thani said: “The discussed topics reflect the
support of higher education institutions to the health sector in keeping
abreast of new technologies and medical development in Qatar.”
QU-Health Continuous Professional Development for Health Care
Practitioners co-ordinator Dr Hiba Bawadi said, “This workshop
contributes to fulfilling the need of healthcare providers to continuous
education and awareness of the recent technologies in medicine.”
BRC assistant professor of Metabolic Diseases and Cardiovascular
Research Dr Huseyin Yalcin added, “Regenerative medicine is a very
popular field of research for generation of live tissue replacements
that have the potential to cure today’s many serious health conditions.
We expect to see tissue-engineered, stem cell-seeded products in
clinical practice in the near future.”
