At least nine people including five students were killed in the Pakistani city of Peshawar on Friday when militants stormed an agriculture training centre.

A security guard and five students are among the dead, the hospital that received the bodies said.

"We also received 18 other people with minor injuries," Muhammad Tariq from Hayatabad Medical Complex told dpa. At least 37 people were injured in total, sources said.

Five attackers were killed, police officer Muhammad Nadeem said.

Police said the attack began at around 8:40 am (0340 GMT) when burqa-clad attackers stormed the compound in the north-western city.

Local media reported that police and the army reached the site shortly afterwards and exchanged fire with the attackers. Intermittent gunfire and explosions were heard from inside the premises for about two hours.

The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) group claimed responsibility for the attack. TTP spokesman Muhammad Khurasani said in an email that the fighters attacked "a secret office of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI)."  The compound includes a hostel facility for diploma students and there were around 100 people there at the time of attack, police said.

The assault took place on Eid-milad-e-Nabi, the birth anniversary of prophet Mohammed, a public holiday in Pakistan.

In 2016, gunmen attacked Bacha Khan University in north-western Pakistan killing at least 20 people.
