The 5th Forum of the Stakeholder Co-ordinators of the 2nd Qatar Action Plan which concluded on Wednesday recommended enhancing the role of the National Traffic Safety Committee (NTSC) as the country's leading institution to develop policies.
The committee was urged to monitor the plan's implementation and strengthen Qatar's global position in reducing road traffic accidents.
The 2nd Qatar Action Plan, covering five years in the second phase of the National Traffic Safety Strategy (2018-2022), is aimed at reducing the number of fatalities and grievous injuries in road traffic accidents (RTAs).
At the conclusion of the two-day meeting, NTSC Secretary General Brigadier Mohamed Abdulla al-Malki announced the forum's recommendations, prominent among which are the committee's plans to strengthen the road accident investigation systems and building a modern national workforce to deal with the issue.

It has been decided to focus further on reducing accidents in the five geographical traffic areas of Qatar that witnessed more than 90% of road traffic deaths in the five years of the 1st Qatar Action Plan (2013-2017).
The NTSC would continuously support the Supreme Council for Delivery and Legacy's (SC) ambitious plans for the FIFA 2022 to be held in Qatar and it would also ensure the wholehearted participation of various stakeholders for achieving its targets.
In co-ordination with the National Bureau of Traffic Safety, the committee has authorised the traffic accident investigation team as a specialised body to support the ongoing efforts of the General Directorate of Traffic for reducing the RTAs.
The stakeholders would implement their respective work plans, numbering close to 400 on their own and follow up the implementation process at regular intervals.
It has been decided to give adequate time for the strategy co-ordinators to emphasise the implementation of pedestrian projects on time and reduce pedestrian casualties.
The committee would work to achieve a target of 15 per 100,000 in the reduction of severe injuries from road accidents by the year 2020.
In co-ordination with the awareness and media work groups, the committee hopes to develop an effective national traffic awareness system.
The National Traffic Safety Office will handle and complete the new electronic evaluation and follow-up system to support the decision makers.
The committee will adopt a global security system which is to be upgraded to suit the requirements of Qatar. The committee will personally follow up with the agencies and institutions concerned for the effective implementation of the action plans and submit periodic reports to the relevant authorities.
The National Traffic Safety Office will emphasise the importance of implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals related to traffic safety, congestion and sustainable cities and developing road and transport networks.
The committee will closely follow up the transport sector plans, especially major events such as the FIFA 2022 World Cup.
The necessity of improving the geographic information system in the country by the departments concerned was also stressed in the recommendations.
