The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has announced the completion of the Doha Corniche Development Project implemented along a distance of 9km from the Dafna area to the Ras Abu Abboud bridge.
The opening was held yesterday in the presence of Central Municipal Council (CMC) members Jassem Abdulla al-Malki and Shaikha al-Jufairi, Doha Municipality Technical Affairs Department director Abdulla Ibrahim al-Sada and a number of Ashghal staff members and project engineers.
The authority started implementing the project in October 2017 within an integrated plan to develop Corniche areas in Doha, Al Khor, Shamal city and Al Wakrah beach, as part of its corporate social responsibility, Ashghal said in a statement.
The Doha Corniche Development Project included extended expansion and maintenance works such as flooring, parking slots and toilets. All pedestrian walkways between the parking lots and the main walkway of Doha Corniche have also been renovated using a new interlock with a variety of designs, shapes and colours.
“This is in addition to replacing the floor of the public yard on the Corniche with new interlocks having seven squares of different sizes,” Ashghal said.
The project also included the renovation of all parking slots on the Doha Corniche by replacing the old interlocks with a more solid asphalt layer, enabling ease of maintenance in the future.
Al-Sada complimented Ashghal’s efforts to implement the development and maintenance of Doha Corniche, which is one of the premier tourist destinations in Qatar.
Al-Malki, who represents CMC constituency No 1, said Ashghal has opened Corniche areas in Wakrah, Shamal, Khor and Doha as gifts to residents.
Al-Jufairi, CMC member from constituency No 8, noted: “What distinguishes this Corniche is that it will serve all visitors to Doha city, especially after the completion of this development project.”
Noora al-Mansouri from the Building Design Department at Ashghal said the design for the development project was selected and approved from among multiple designs presented by a team of new engineers, and Doha Corniche renovation project was completed within a period of seven months.
Al-Mansouri added that 24 public toilets were completely refurbished along the Doha Corniche, along with the installation of 10 facilities between Hotel Park (near Sheraton Doha) and Al Shuyoukh Port opposite Souq Waqif, and these facilities have been connected with surface water networks and electricity lines in co-operation with other service providers.
In future, facilities such as refreshment stalls and cafeterias are expected to be provided there.
The 2006 Asian Games Oryx mascot will also be renovated.
Ashghal considers the Doha Corniche development as one of the most important projects considering the importance of the areas as a tourist attraction.
The Doha Corniche serves as an open space for people with a distinctive waterfront park that stretches around the Doha bay over an area of approximately 120,000sq m.
The traditional wooden dhows in the clear waters reflect the charming history of the city.
