Mount Agung on the Indonesian resort island of Bali yesterday shot volcanic ash 2,800m into the sky but no “destructive eruption” was expected, an official said. “Magma is still rising to the surface so there will likely be more eruptions,” said Sutopo Nugroho, National Disaster Management Agency spokesman. “But a major eruption is unlikely,” he said, adding that Bali was safe to visit. Authorities have imposed a danger zone within a 4km radius of the volcano’s crater. The volcano’s warning level has remained one notch below the highest advisory since February. The 3,031-metre volcano’s last deadly eruptions occurred in 1963 and 1964, killing around 1,200 people.
