Three members of a family became the latest fatalities after they were buried alive yesterday when a landslide struck their makeshift home in a village of Bhaktapur district, said Narayan Prasad Bhatta, the chief district officer.
“Hundreds of security personnel have been deployed in the sites,” he said.
Large part of the district was inundated after floodwaters from the Hanumante River entered the settlements.
The Home Ministry had earlier put the death toll at 50.
“In some areas, water levels had risen up to 1.2m from the ground.
Hundreds of people have been stranded,” Bhatta said adding that schools and businesses were shut due to floods.
The extreme weather has affected 36 of Nepal’s 77 districts, with 20 people injured and nine missing.
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology said further heavy rains were expected in next few days in the country’s central, western and eastern regions.
