Pakistan's former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was brought to hospital on Sunday after a heart condition in jail, where he is serving a 10-year sentence for a corruption conviction.
Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz have been held at a high-security prison in the city of Rawalpindi since July 13 following their conviction on corruption charges a week earlier.
Special security arrangements were made for shifting the jailed leader to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) hospital in Islamabad, local media reported.
The decision to transfer him to hospital was taken by the Punjab government in line with the advice of doctors who examined Sharif, Shaukat Javed, a minister for Punjab province, told state-run PTV.
He said a electrocardiogram (ECG) conducted on Sharif had shown problems with his heart.
"Sharif is not feeling well since he was imprisoned, but authorities [initially] did not shift him to hospital for treatment," said Muhammad Mehdi, a spokesman of Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
He said that Sharif's personal physician had not been allowed to visit him in jail. Sharif has a known history of diabetes and heart problems, and underwent a surgery in 2016.
Sharif was removed from office by the Supreme Court last year.
