Malaysia has been showing a remarkable rise in the number of students from the Middle East, including Qatar, pursuing education in the Southeast Asian nation's universities in recent years.
At the Study in Malaysia event on Thursday at Movenpick Hotel, West Bay, the organisers explained that more than 170 students from Qatar, including 28 Qataris, joined their universities after the completion of the last academic year.
Malaysia has more than 110 universities, including 80 private and 10 foreign universities.
More than 15 universities, offering a range of courses starting from under-graduate to post-graduate programmes, including medicine, engineering are participating in the three-day event organised by Education Malaysia and My Aspiration, an agency supporting the requirements of international students.
Malaysian universities have no less than 173,000 students from nearly 160 countries and the number is expected to increase considerably this year as many universities are receiving encouraging responses from aspirants from different parts of the world.
The organisers also informed that three of the world's top 100 universities are in Malaysia, which is ranked globally by the Unesco as the 11th preferred education destination.
"Quality education is not only affordable at reputable Malaysian universities, the students also receive better access to globally renowned education system," said Malaysian ambassador Ahmed Fadil bin Shamsudheen.
The envoy pointed out that the comparatively lower educational and living costs too have attracted a lot of students to his country.
"Kuala Lumpur has been ranked among the least expensive cities in the world for living," said Shamsudheen while adding that the Malaysian capital has also been named as the most affordable student city by QS World University rankings.
While thanking Qatar residents for their faith in Malaysian educational institutions, the ambassador said another educational fair organised earlier in the year also attracted good response from students of this country.
The envoy said there are more than 15,000 students from the Middle East studying in universities in Malaysia. He said that as many as 10 foreign universities are having their campuses spread all over Malaysia and they include those from the US, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and China.
