The annual Mahaseel festival at Katara – the Cultural Village was opened Monday by general manager Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim al-Sulaiti, along with several officials from the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) and local food production companies.
The festival is in co-operation with the MME. The opening was also attended by Yousef al-Khulaifi, head of Agricultural Affairs Department at the MME and Farhoud al-Hajri, head of Livestock Department at the MME who both assured the Ministry’s support to such initiatives that assist local farmers to increase their production.
Running until January 5, the market offers various types and varieties of fresh vegetables and fruits from local farms in Qatar. After January 5, Mahaseel will continue every Thursday to Saturday until March 31, 2019 at Katara's southern area.


The market also features flowers and ornamental plants

More activities have been added to the festival this year such as the “Home Garden” section that displays flowers and decoration plants to motivate people to plant and increase the culture of greenery.
On this occasion, Dr al-Sulaiti stressed Katara’s commitment to support and boost local production and reflect the importance of agriculture in Qatar through this festival in a bid to approach the sustainable development strategy.
“We have achieved a successful three Mahaseel festivals in a row and in this time, our festival has evolved as more parts are taking part in the festival and the diversity”, Dr al-Sulaiti said.
The festival opens its doors daily from 9am to 9pm this year hosting 22 local farms, flowers nursery and six other national companies for dairies and meat products all available with their fresh produce to the visitors.
The market features Qatari farms selling various types of fresh fruits and vegetables, flowers and ornamental plants and local companies offering food products related to livestock, in addition to natural honey produced by the Qatari farms and the best varieties of local dates. 
The festival also offers several entertainment and awareness activities for children and adults to enhance the experience of visitors and educate them on the best practices while shopping. 
The activities will also include workshops on plantation and flowers arrangement, in addition to some essential agricultural knowledge.
Restaurants and cafes offering local traditional foods are also available at the festival with a dedicated area for families.
Mahaseel serves as a good marketing platform for local farms, which offer reasonable prices for their produce.
