The National Commission for Education, Culture and Science of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education organised, in co-operation with the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Qatar University (QU), the “First Student Forum for Human Rights”.
The forum included a number of activities and research papers on human rights’ concepts in the society and university students, and a presentation of the projects prepared by Qatar University students in this field.
Secretary-general of Qatar National Commission for Education, Culture and Science Dr Hamda al-Sulaiti, said that Qatar’s policy in the field of human rights is based on the firm principles of the Islamic religion and the inherent values of the Qatari people in adopting humanitarian initiatives that serve all human beings and provide development assistance to poor and developing countries in addition to providing education opportunities to millions of children around the world.
Head of the Arab and Islamic Affairs Department of Qatar National Commission Abdullah al-Kubaisi said in a speech, he delivered on behalf of Dr al-Sulaiti, that Qatar’s keenness on promoting and protecting the human rights situation is a strategic option that is the cornerstone of the overall development of the country, pointing out that Qatar’s membership in the United Nations Human Rights Council and its co-operation with international organisations are aimed at consolidating the concepts and culture of human rights through an approach based on the rule of law, transparency, justice and human dignity.
He further stressed Qatar’s keenness to strengthen the legislative framework of human rights, pointing that the country has ratified and joined many human rights conventions at the international and regional levels, in addition to the State’s commitment to respect international conventions, to implement all human rights, to renounce violence, to promote the peaceful resolution of international disputes and to co-operate with nations in love of peace, as stated in the provisions of the Qatari Constitution.
For her part, Head of the Department of Social Sciences at Qatar University, Fatma al-Kubaisi said that the social department is keen to teach society and human rights courses in the social work programme because of the importance of this issue in the local and international community, and she stressed the need to disseminate the culture of human rights, which promotes the values of tolerance and acceptance of the other.
Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Dr Abdulnasser Saleh Alyafei said that the aim of this remarkable event is to consolidate the principles and values of human rights in present and future generations to make them a way of life, especially since the world has become a small village in terms of communication, principles and common destiny.
