A fire at a kitchen market in Dhaka destroyed almost 150 makeshift stores on Saturday, two days after another blaze in the Bangladeshi capital killed 25 people.
Fire fighters and members of the armed forces needed two hours to put out the fire in the affluent neighbourhood of Gulshan, Shakil Newaz, a director at the Fire Service and Civil Defence Department, said.
The fire is believed to have broken out at a perfume store early in the morning and spread quickly to other shops, according to Atikul Islam, mayor of the Dhaka North City Corporation.
No casualties were immediately reported.
The makeshift stores were built using corrugated iron sheets next to the popular two-storey DCC Market after a fire devastated the market in January 2017.
Back then the authorities bulldozed part of the market and replaced it with the makeshift stores.
Talal Rizvi, a leader of the market's traders association, said Saturday's fire had destroyed all 150 of them.
On Thursday, a fire at the 22-storey Faruk Rupayan Tower in Dhaka's upmarket Banani neighbourhood, less than two kilometres from the kitchen market, killed at least 25 people and injured 70.
