The Doha Central Market is set to get a year-round, air-conditioned sale yard for local agricultural products with the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) preparing to offer a tender in this regard.
A source at the MME has told local Arabic daily Arrayah that the proposed yard would be the sixth such facility across Qatar. The currently operational seasonal yards are at Al Mazrouah, Al Wakrah, Al Khor and Al Thakhira, Al Sheehaniyah and Al Shamal.
The new yard is expected to be ready for operation during the next season with an area much larger than all the previously opened yards. More than 75 local farms are expected to benefit from the new yard.
The yards for local agricultural products are a part of the MME's interest to promote marketing platforms for local agriculture products to further enhance production in such an important sector for food security in the country.
The proposed sale yard is described as a part of a comprehensive project, launched more than two years ago, to renovate the whole area of the Doha Central Market. The project further aims at developing the area into a sophisticated modern market with high quality services.
The source pointed out that the proposed sale yard at the Doha Central Market is also in response to popular demand that first emerged almost seven years ago with the opening of the first yard and the considerable success of the initiative.
The proposed sale yard for local agricultural products is expected to enable Doha residents to buy fresh vegetables, fruits, fish, poultry, eggs and other products and provide local farmers a good opportunity to reach out to more customers.
However, details of the full development project of the Doha Central Market have not been determined yet because there is a number of different entities involved in the issue, Arrayah added.
