Aspetar aims to become a global leader in sports medicine and exercise science by 2020, a top official announced Friday.
The first specialised orthopaedic and sports medicine hospital in the Gulf region will also be the medical service provider for the 2019 IAAF World Athletics Championships in Doha in September and October.
“Our work with athletes, researchers and medical professionals from around the world is a cornerstone to the success of our vision,” explained Dr Abdulaziz al-Kuwari, acting CEO, Aspetar.
He was addressing the opening session of ‘International Conference on Medicine and Science in Athletics,’ which began yesterday at Aspire Zone. More than 250 international speakers and participants from around the world are taking part in the three-day event organised by Aspetar.
Aspetar, which provides the best medical treatment for sports-related injuries, is staffed by some of the world’s leading sports medicine practitioners and researchers.
“We have chosen an ambitious agenda for this year - one that seeks to reframe our approach to implementing research findings in practical treatment of sports injuries in athletics," explained Dr al-Kuwari.
"Our guests and experts at the conference will address topics such as optimising health and performance in athletics, heat acclimation and cooling, athletes’ experiences of injuries, performance nutrition and common illnesses in athletics, sports and performance nutrition,” he noted.
According to al-Kuwari, Aspetar’s mission is to assist athletes to achieve their maximum performance and full potential.
“That is especially relevant today as we are standing just a few metres away from Khalifa International Stadium – the home of the 2019 IAAF Diamond League – where behind the scenes, hundreds of our colleagues from Aspetar medical staff will provide world-class sports medicine and physiotherapy services to the international athletes," continued the official.
He noted that the speakers who have developed new research-based treatments will give a great cross-section of findings and perspectives from around the world providing a robust dialogue in the coming days.
Dr al-Kuwari also stated that Aspetar supports more than 100 sporting events and championships this year. Last year, Aspetar’s National Sports Medicine Programme provided medical care for all sporting events held in the country, requiring 370 doctors and specialists who worked more than 11,000 hours.
The conference is one of Aspetar’s strategic preparations to ensure that it can provide the most comprehensive medical support for 2019 IAAF World Athletics Championships as the country gears up to host thousands of the world’s leading athletes.
