The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has announced the full opening of Al Gharrafa Interchange (popularly known as Immigration Interchange) to traffic after converting the old roundabout into a signalised junction. Ashghal also completed works to develop parts of the service roads on 22 February Street. The opening of the key interchange has been announced ahead of Eid al-Adha and will ensure better convenience for traffic during holidays.
Engineer Mohamed Arqoub al-Khaldi, head of Doha City Section, Road Projects Department at Ashghal, while announcing the opening, said that the development of the interchange contributes significantly to improving traffic and increasing capacity.
“The interchange is located in an area with high traffic density and a large number of vehicles use this intersection on a daily basis. Al- Garrafa Interchange connects Doha with the northern areas of the country and provides easy access to the surrounding areas such Al- Luqta, Madinat Khalifa, Al- Messila and Al- Rayyan in addition to several services, educational, health, commercial and residential facilities,” he explained.
The project has improved the accesses of the roads surrounding the interchange by developing the service roads on both sides, according to this. In addition to this, new light poles at the intersection were added while 22 February Street witnessed development and got better access to Al- Rayyan Intersection and Rashida Intersection.
Additional parking facilities have been set up on the western side of 22 February Street,” he said. The project also includes the development of a stormwater drainage system, and the protection of existing services of Ooredoo, Kahramaa and others, a statement added.
