Awareness programmes, workshops and lectures yesterday marked the observance of International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer by the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa).
Represented by the National Programme for Conservation and Energy Efficiency (Tarsheed), Kahramaa organised various programmes at its Awareness Park where students and officials from various departments were present.
The programmes were aimed at raising awareness about the impact of carbon emission and the need for preservation of the ozone layer by minimising carbon emission and pollution.
The event, held in co-operation with the Department of Health, Safety and Environment at Kahramaa, focused on the protection of the ozone layer by phasing out the production of numerous substances that are responsible for ozone depletion as per the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.
The programmes urged all to adopt environmental-friendly practices in order to bring down carbon emission and achieve sustainable environmental development in lines with the Qatar National Vision 2030.
“We are taking up efforts in a bid to bring down the carbon emission by raising awareness among all especially the younger generation. Special campaigns are carried in a bid to make all aware of the harmful effects of carbon emission. Since its inception in 2012, Tarsheed has been active in promoting alternatives that bring down carbon emission,” said engineer Mohamed Khalid al-Sharshani, head of the technical section at Tarsheed.
As per figures, released by Kaharamaa, 2018 witnessed reduction of 3.66 tonnes of carbon emission after Tarsheed launched a slew of measures including intervention, awareness and enforcement.
Dr Mohamed Ali al-Mohannadi from Health, Safety and Environment Department of Kahramaa, Mona Ali al-Saei from Ministry of Municipality and Environment and Moza al-Mesef and Maryam al-Mohammadi from Kahramaa also attended the programme.
